How Does Bentonite Waterproofing Work?

Recommended Posts

The science behind bentonite waterproofing is simple yet incredibly effective. Bentonite clay particles are charged in such a way that when they absorb water, they create a gel-like, dense layer that seals even the tiniest gaps. This expansion process is reversible meaning that if the clay dries, it can rehydrate and continue protecting the surface.

In typical installations, bentonite panels or membranes are placed on the outside of a building foundation. When the surrounding soil becomes wet, the bentonite activates and swells, blocking any potential water entry. Unlike synthetic membranes that rely on adhesive bonding, bentonite naturally bonds to the substrate and the surrounding soil, creating a continuous and self-healing waterproof layer.

At Promaster Maintenance Corp Paving and Masonry, we ensure every installation is properly prepared the surface is cleaned, smoothed, and the bentonite membrane is tightly sealed. This guarantees a long-term waterproofing solution that withstands hydrostatic pressure and shifting soil conditions.
